Pendant Lights Over a Kitchen Island: How High, How Far Apart and How Many
As a guide, hang kitchen island pendants so the bottom sits about 750 to 900 mm above the benchtop, space them 600 to 800 mm apart between centres, and keep each one at least 150 mm in from the island's ends. Most islands suit two or three pendants, depending on length and pendant size. Put them on a dimmer.
Quick reference
These are starting points, not rules. Pendant size, ceiling height and how you use the island all change the answer.
| Island length | Number of pendants | Suggested pendant width |
|---|---|---|
| Up to about 1.8 m | 2 small pendants, or 1 linear pendant | 200 to 300 mm each |
| About 1.8 to 2.7 m | 2 medium or 3 small pendants | 250 to 400 mm each |
| Over 2.7 m | 3 pendants, or a long linear pendant | 300 to 450 mm each |
Rule of thumb for width: don't let the pendants' combined width take up more than about two-thirds of the island's length, or the group starts to look crowded.

How high to hang pendants over an island
The usual range is 750 to 900 mm from the benchtop to the bottom of the pendant. That's low enough to light the bench and create an intimate feel, and high enough that people can see each other across the island and nobody hits their head leaning over.
Adjust for:
- Ceiling height. In rooms with 2.7 m ceilings or higher, or raked ceilings, pendants can sit towards the top of the range or a little higher so they don't look lost.
- Sightlines. Stand where you usually cook and sit where guests sit. If a pendant blocks the view to the living area or the view outside, raise it.
- Tall households. Nudge the height up if anyone regularly has to duck.
- Pendant shape. Large, wide shades feel lower than slim ones at the same height.
Most pendants have adjustable cables. Your electrician can set the final drop on site once you've seen them in place.
How far apart
Space pendants evenly along the island, measuring between centres rather than edges. For most pendants, 600 to 800 mm between centres works. Larger shades need more space; small glass pendants can sit closer. Keep each end pendant at least 150 mm in from the end of the island, and ideally centred over the bench rather than the overhang where people sit.
How many pendants
Two or three pendants suit most islands. Odd numbers often look balanced, but island length and pendant width matter more than the count. A single long linear pendant is a clean alternative on long islands and in minimalist kitchens.

Choosing the fitting
- Open or closed shades. Open-bottom shades throw more light onto the bench but can show a bright globe to anyone seated. Diffused glass or deep shades reduce glare.
- Globe or integrated LED. Choose a warm white that matches the kitchen, usually around 3000K, with high colour rendering. See warm white vs cool white.
- Dimmable. Check the pendant or globe is dimmable and compatible with the dimmer, or you'll get flicker.
- Weight. Heavy glass or metal pendants need proper support in the ceiling.
Wiring and installation
Ceiling points for pendants need to be in the right place before the ceiling is sheeted, centred on the benchtop rather than the cabinetry below, and with blocking for heavy fittings. Check they won't clash with a rangehood or ceiling fan. Installing or moving ceiling points is electrical work for a licensed electrician in Queensland.
If you're renovating an existing kitchen, pendants can usually be added, though access depends on the ceiling space above.
Pendants are only one layer
Island pendants look beautiful, but they don't light the rest of the kitchen. Pair them with recessed strip under the overhead cabinets for task light, and a toe-kick glow under the island. Our kitchen lighting ideas cover the full scheme, and our kitchen LED strip lighting and under-cabinet LED lighting pages show the finish. Frequently asked questions
How high should pendants be over a kitchen island?
As a guide, the bottom of each pendant should sit about 750 to 900 mm above the benchtop. That lights the bench well while keeping sightlines clear across the kitchen. In rooms with high or raked ceilings, pendants can sit a little higher.
How far apart should pendant lights be over an island?
Space them evenly, usually 600 to 800 mm apart between centres depending on the pendant size, and keep each one at least 150 mm in from the ends of the island so the light falls on the benchtop rather than the floor.
How many pendants should go over a kitchen island?
Most islands up to about 1.8 metres suit two smaller pendants or one linear pendant; longer islands usually suit three. Larger pendants mean fewer fittings. Odd numbers often look balanced, but the island's length and the pendant's width matter more than the count.
Should island pendants be on a dimmer?
Yes. Pendants at full brightness suit cooking, but dimmed they turn the island into a relaxed place for drinks and dinner. Check that the LED globes or fittings are dimmable and compatible with the dimmer.
Can pendant lights be added over an existing island?
Usually, yes. A licensed electrician can run new ceiling points above the island, though access depends on the ceiling space and whether there's a floor above. It's easiest during a kitchen renovation, before the ceiling is patched and painted.
