Wardrobe, Bookshelf and Display Cabinet Lighting: A Guide to Joinery Lighting

Joinery lighting uses slim LED strip set into shelves, hanging rails and cabinet frames so the contents glow and you never see the light source. In wardrobes it switches on with door or motion sensors; on bookshelves and display cabinets it's dimmable accent light. It has to be designed with your cabinetmaker, because the recesses and cable paths are built into the joinery.

Why joinery lighting lifts a home

Built-in joinery is one of the biggest investments in a new home or renovation, and at night most of it disappears into shadow. Lighting it changes two things. Practically, you get light exactly where you're looking: inside a robe, on a shelf, in a drawer. Visually, cabinetry becomes a feature, and a room gains a warm, layered glow without adding ceiling lights.

Walk-in robes and wardrobes

A robe is where good light matters most and where it's usually worst: a single downlight in the middle of the ceiling leaves the hanging space in shadow.

Options that work:

  • Vertical strip in the side panels. Light falls across the hanging clothes and shelves from the sides, with no shadows from your body.
  • Strip under each shelf. Good for folded clothes, shoes and bags.
  • Lit hanging rails. A rail with integrated LED lights the clothes directly below. Hotel-style and very effective.
  • Glass-front drawers and shoe displays. Strip inside turns them into a feature.

Switching: door sensors for hinged or sliding doors, motion sensors for open walk-in robes. Lights come on as you enter and go off when you leave.

Colour: warm-neutral white with high colour rendering (CRI 90+) so you can tell navy from black. Our guide to warm white vs cool white explains why CRI matters.

Bookshelves and library walls

  • Front-edge strip under each shelf lights the spines of the books below. A diffused strip avoids hot spots and glare on glossy covers.
  • Vertical strip in the uprights lights shelves from the sides and suits open, object-filled shelving.
  • Rear strip creates a backlit silhouette effect behind objects. Striking on display shelves, less useful for reading titles.

Put library lighting on a dimmer. At full brightness it's practical; dimmed, it becomes a warm accent for the room.

Display cabinets, bars and glass cabinets

Glass shelves, mirrored backs and glassware all multiply light, which makes display cabinets especially rewarding to light. Strip in the top of the cabinet or in the uprights shines down through glass shelves. For collectibles, wine and artwork, LED is ideal: it gives off almost no ultraviolet light, and the heat stays with the driver, which should sit outside the cabinet.

Media walls and floating units

A soft glow behind a wall-mounted TV reduces eye strain and makes the wall look finished. Strip under a floating media unit makes it appear to hover. Both work best when the cabinet is designed with a recess for the strip and a hidden cable path. For light along ceilings and walls, see our guide to cove, bulkhead and shadow-line lighting.

Bedheads and floating bedsides

A timber or upholstered bedhead with concealed strip behind or above it, and a glow under floating bedside tables, gives a bedroom a calm, hotel feel with no ceiling lights on. Our bedroom LED feature lighting page shows the effect.

What to agree with your cabinetmaker

Joinery lighting is a collaboration between the cabinetmaker and the electrician. Before the drawings are signed off, agree:

  1. Routing depth and width for each profile, so the strip sits flush and hidden
  2. Cable holes and paths from each strip to its driver
  3. A driver cupboard or void, ventilated and accessible, outside display spaces
  4. Sensor positions for robes, pantries and drawers
  5. Profile finish to match the joinery: black, white, brushed or anodised
  6. Who supplies the profiles and when the electrician needs to be on site

The same coordination applies in the kitchen; our kitchen lighting ideas include a cabinetmaker checklist.

Can it be added to existing joinery?

Often, yes, using slim surface-mounted profiles and discreet cable routes. The result is usually good, though rarely as clean as lighting routed in during manufacture, and the driver still needs a ventilated, accessible home. Hardwired drivers and switching are electrical work for a licensed electrician in Queensland; our guide on whether you need an electrician for LED strip explains why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best lighting for a walk-in robe?

Vertical LED strip in the side panels or under each shelf, switched by a door or motion sensor so it turns on as you enter. Use warm-neutral white with high colour rendering (CRI 90+) so you can tell navy from black.

How do you light bookshelves?

Recess slim LED strip into the underside of each shelf near the front edge, or run vertical strip up the sides. Put it on a dimmer so the shelves can be a soft accent in the evening. Diffused strip avoids glare on glossy book spines and objects.

Can LED strip be added to existing cabinets?

Often, yes, using surface-mounted slim profiles and discreet cable routes, though the finish is rarely as clean as lighting routed in during manufacture. The driver needs a ventilated, accessible spot. Adding it during a joinery build is always neater and usually cheaper.

Do wardrobe lights need a sensor?

They don't need one, but sensors make robe lighting far more useful. Door sensors switch the lights as doors open; motion sensors suit open walk-in robes. Both stop the lights being left on.

Does LED lighting damage clothes, books or wine?

Quality LEDs give off almost no ultraviolet light and little heat at the light itself, so they're much gentler on fabrics, paper and wine than halogen. Keep drivers outside enclosed display spaces so heat stays away from the contents.
